»Show You Me«

by Ryan Gordon Penn

You leave too soon
Not enough time to show you the real me
Too soon for my love to surface
Please don't leave me now
Was just about
to show you me

Not enough time to argue and make up
Never a chance to apologize with flowers
You haven't seen how I am with others
Never seen how I deal with an uncomfortable moment
You only know half of me, please don't leave me now
I was just about to show you me

Don't make judgements based on half of me
Don't run away without trying it out
You never know that what you may resist
May be just what you need
It is not fear of the unknown that scares you most
It's fear of the known that stops you in your tracks
Maybe for once it was the right guy that you attracted

Don't deny me this, don't leave me now
Don't throw away something without trying it out
I'm shattered into sadness because I was just about to show you me

...If I showed You Me and you showed Me You then it could be Us...

  •  Esther Odendaal: "I like the questions that follow this poem - would it be better to show more of our true selves sooner? Do we really protect ourselves by wearing the masks? Excellent!"
