»We owe it«

by Tshililo Khanari

We owe it to Mama Africa
To her breasts of Mount Everest design
To her hips of the Egyptian Pyramids
And to the waters of purity in the Cape and Cairo wharfs

We owe it to our great kings of mother continent
To the great Alefanso of the Congo region
To Inkosi Shaka Zulu of Amazulu
To Mambo of the MaShona in Zimbabwe
To Makhado of the Vhavenda
And to Mzilikazi of Amandebele

We owe it to our identity
To the drumbeat that mingles with our heartbeats in delectation
To the Lake calmness of our Rainbow identity
To colour Black, Green, Red and Yellow of our diversity
And to vhuthu and Ubuntu of our recipe

We owe it to our ancestors
Who ate drumming and dancing as pastimes.
Whose blood was shed in the valleys for liberty
Whose hands tilled our land for agricultural survival
To our heros who triumphed in the blood jungle

We owe it to Tshavhadinda and Acho caves
To the great Dzivhafundudzi lake
To the monarch river Nile of Egypt
To the oceans that epidermise our continent
We owe it to our Heritage
