»Silence (miracle of)«

by Mercy Buhle Mhlaba

We lay to rest past hurts invoked by vindictive words
We embark on new itineraries with newly found grit
We hold our tongues lest they lash out
And annihilate what we have so assiduously built
Which we occasionally glimpse on and archive far
Not because we fear the past but because we value the present
So we ogle with awe at the bigger person in us
While we muse over priceless functional ethics...the miracle of silence

We fix our gaze on the hills whose crests shine with life
We appreciate the splendour of sunsets and the calm of the nights
We are estranged to the tainting rage that once gaggled us
And tore apart our true moral fibre
Which we now cleave to with utmost vehemence
Not because the sordid history spits guilt to our conscience
But because we have a second lease to bridge our disparity
So we flip the pages and close the chapter
While we marvel at the effects of simplistic acts...the miracle of silence
