»Ode to Wacko Jacko«

by Mamello Monageng

We got to know you through your voice at 11 years old
You led a life that we could not understand
Whilst others chose to judge you
Many chose to cherish your talents
For as much as a man lived his life
He too can give something valuable to the world

You started with the man on the mirror
You united black and white and healed the world
Your life was a thriller, working day and night
They rocked your world
And you tried to be invincible, unbreakable
Amidst the challenges you were faced with
This time around, you were speechless with no privacy
You were not alone, you cried with R. Kelly
And had to scream louder with blood on the dance floor
They did not leave you alone
You asked why they wanna trip on you
You kept the faith for you knew they don't care about us
I do not believe you were bad, nor a smooth criminal
In your history
You were a lover and not a fighter
The girl was yours even though she chose to be out of your life
You just couldn't stop loving

I knew you at the prime of my innocence
My dress, my hairdo identified me with you
You were in many ways liberating me to be whatever I wanted.
Your dance floor moves released in me the ability to walk on the moon and
Never to stop till I get enough

You showed us the beauty of the Liberian girl,
Whatever happened
heaven could not wait
now you're gone too soon
Yes, we will remember the times
