»The Parched Land«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

Actually, it can never rain
For the heavens are upset
No man can appease the gods
So the consequences thereof
The parched land.

Drought connotes evil and death
The land is dry, not of rain really
But of morals and modesty
Of respect and forgiveness
Perhaps, that is why the land is parched.

Once the streams were deep and overflowing
Birds chirped merrily in the meadows
Everyone smiled ceaselessly
Because the rain never failed
The mind was at peace.

A parched land
A precarious tomorrow
Nothing to hope for
Good day for the hyenas and the vultures
Days no one looks forward to.
