»Little Things Matter«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

Are we so blind
That we see the vast blue sky
And yet ignore the shining sun?
Consider the mighty ocean
But do you consider the drops of water?
Look at the insurmountable Everest
With foot in the earth and head above the clouds
What would she be
Without the grains of sand?

Do we expect to live harmoniously
With our faces buried deep
In sands of indifference?
Do we expect to love each other
With every breath being a threat?
Do we expect to be given a little time
When we can not sacrifice our own?
Do we look forward to receive big
When our hearts grieve to give little?

Do we look forward to an Eden
When we are snakes in the grass?
Slick and slothful are we
But we expect to do big things
And yet fail the smallest of them?
Do we expect peace of mind
When we constantly challenge our consciences?

The very things that seem to matter least
Do they count a great deal?
Little deeds of kindness and affection
The right words at the right time
May be burdensome for a while
But this is your road to discovering
Little things make a big difference.
