»Wormsong«
Beginning as a worm
We creep and crawl around
Fighting for our food
And to the ground we're bound
We find our favourite plant
And cling on for dear life
Munching as we go
Our teeth cut as a knife.
We all look much the same
We like to blend right in
All we do is eat
Be faithful to our kin.
It's pretty hard to see
We have no necks to turn
Eating's all we know
For nothing else we yearn
But then there comes a time
We find a quiet place
Build a little house
We spin with finest lace
And there it is we hide
As long as it may take
Safe from wind and storm
New form of self to make
We don't do the changing
No body hears us weep
Nature has its way
All we can do is sleep
And while it is we dream
A miracle takes place
Bodies are transformed
We've never known such grace
For when we finally wake
Our house is just too small
All our legs have gone
We'll never have to crawl!
We make a little hole
And squeeze our new selves through
And as we emerge
We fly as we must do
The world's a bigger place
We marvel at the view -
We drink nectar now
And sip on drops of dew.
We creep and crawl around
Fighting for our food
And to the ground we're bound
We find our favourite plant
And cling on for dear life
Munching as we go
Our teeth cut as a knife.
We all look much the same
We like to blend right in
All we do is eat
Be faithful to our kin.
