»Call a spade a spade«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

For a long time we have condoned
What we rightfully ought to condemn
Time after time we have overlooked
What lies obvious before our very eyes
Ignorance has flirted with our consciences
But the principled are always quick
To call a spade a spade.

We can not see the walls we can't see through
And are plunged deep in seas of perpetual ignorance
There is no reason for anyone
To beat aimlessly about the bush
What works therefore
Call a spade a spade.

Although everyman is entitled to an opinion
The truth needs no opinion
Nor any man to entitle it to himself
It just cannot be denied
Hence it becomes incumbent
To call a spade a spade
Not the cousin of a spoon.
