»The diviner«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

She sees behind walls
But she is no sorcerer
For she causes no misfortune and casts no spells
Neither is she a companion of the hyena
Her hut contains a few herbs, no skulls
She lives in the secluded outskirts by the hills
Where she silently watches everyone on flatland.

Her apparel is not superfluous
She sticks to the modesty of the time
However, during her divination
She veils and leaves it a mystery unsolved
She dances to inaugurate ceremonial cleansing
All terrified, eagerly await her divine message.

Although she knows no one
She knows everything about everyone
Throwing dust and sniffing a concoction
She communicates with unseen spirits
And rolls herself on the ground
'someone eats earth today'
All cover their faces.
She speaks in oxymoron and ironies
But everyone understands her language
She praises the one with feet on the ground
And head above the clouds
She also points to traitors and sell outs
The sorcerers are given to the flames
And the coward's blood stains his spear.

The sun watches as it sets
A handful have graced the vultures' tables
The diviner shrugs once more
She is weary, but inured to fatigue
All stare at her with a villainous glare
But she is not intimidated
She has unknown strengths.

The evening is a time for meditation
All wonder how the diviner has disappeared
She stands by the hillside sniffing her concoction
And laughs raucously, arms akimbo
Then removes her veil to reveal cold eyes
But no one can see her
The diviner's job is done.
