»Look out your window«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

The silence of the night
Laughter in the distance
A lady in white satin
A cock crowing at dawn break
Mayhem on the street.
Look out your window.

The gambler wins the bet
A delightful dog wags its tail
A breeze sweeps away the leaves
A penny falls into a crack
Another smoker chokes once more
Look out your window.

The minister reverently marches along
A drunkard aches for another drink
Everyone looks forward to something
But the unexpected is possible
A glance through your window
You will discover truths about life.

The student hastens to class
Past the vendor at the corner
A poor girl wants to marry
Someone, somewhere is flirting
And it's a dirty rotten chain
Look out your window.
