»The adolescent's mind«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

What do they think about me?
Am lovable?
Am I appealing?
Am I really capable?
In any case, who am I?

They do not understand
I'm not like everyone
Everyone hates me
But I will prove them wrong
In the first place
I never lose.

Mother says I'm still too young
Father says I'm all grown up now
Well, what do I think?
I'm old enough anyway
Who cares?
I'm not a child anymore.

She's quite appealing
Oh! He's so cute
Do I have what it takes?
It's not fantasy this time
It's not a game
It's love at first sight.

I could study medicine
But law is also admirable
I'll make a lot of money
I'll fly around the world
And drive the best car
I'll have the time of my life.

I am never wrong
I don't want to talk
I'm the only that has ever been
Adolescence does not exist
It's just a mixed state of mind
That the society inculcates in me.

I'm just too fat
Let me diet
At least I'm not skinny
Just slim, that's all
What's the difference?
I guess it's the same.

Everyone gets high
Everyone stoops low
Everyone keeps up appearances
Sometimes it's worth a try
After all, a little won't hurt.
