»Curiosity killed the cat«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

What killed the cat?

She was furry and purry
She was a cat
Slept on the mat
And with her swift paw
Slew the foolish rat
For she was a cat
But one day she went missing
She saw and desired a fire
And pounced to her fate

Reminds me of my teenage days
O so full of devious ways
So many a fire
That I did admire
Adventure, my only desire
Probably had nine lives too
So I could lay bets on some
And my back
The ground knew not

Or the reminiscences of childhood
A little lad burning with curiosity
When I stole my father's fishing line
Pulled out a girl's lock
And poked the hornet's nest
Grandma was forbidding as a mountain
So I stole away into the night
To the fields to watch a fight

Mandy was the first girl I kissed
My nerves, I nearly missed
Loved her sister though
But trouble was the least I wanted
So I left both a bone to chew
And they squabbled in a hugger mugger
While I made up with my high school sweet heart
With whom I had been taking ballroom classes

The adventurous ways of the cat
An eligible contrast to my own life
Only the ashes and the memory
The proud arrogant glare into space
And the resounding purr remained
But no one felt too much pain

What could have killed the cat?
Curiosity killed the cat
