»Sand in my shoes«

by Thabani Ray Ngwenya

Then you were a toddler
So was I, but smarter
The dust silver and clean
Did we eat to the fill
O the innocence of childhood
The nuisance of adolescence
And the reminiscence of age
If it would bring back the hey days
Put some sand in my shoes

Life's spring is eternal
Like the deep sea
That replenishes the parched land
To the blossoming flower
And the fruit ripe
Life deserves a sincere tribute
Put some sand in my shoes
I may pay the price due to life

But love could have been better
Your old man was unfanciable
Still, I wouldn't fancy any man
His sand in my shoes an insult
I would kick him like a ball
Since then love has been blind
And marriage opened not our eyes
This, the philosophy of conspirators

Bring them home son
Everyday is a winding path
The cattle are grazing
And the boys are fighting
The sky suspended on my shoulders
Have I held like Atlas
One of the most restless minds
A paranoid parent

Once, or even twice
The tear dimmed mine eyes
I held the ones dearest nearest
No man is stronger than time
My soul I should guard against subterfuge
Put some sand in my shoes
And I will praise the wisdom of age
I will eat dust to the fill again
