»The Stillness«

by Esther Odendaal

It is in the stillness
That I can truly see
The beauty of my life
The wonder that is me
Not that I would boast
For no one needs to hear
What's happening inside
For I am losing fear
Far too long I've heard
What others think of me
I want to shut that out
And learn to simply be
Now I hold the mirror
To see what I can see
Learn more of the gifts
My God has given me

It is in the stillness
That I can truly see
Break the ties that bind
Let myself be free
Let go of all the pain
Release all thoughts of shame
Rid myself of guilt
Be free of all the blame
For each of us is here
To find what lies within
Not what others think
Or judge what seems a sin
What comes to us in life
Is brought for us to learn
And each must learn alone
And our own fingers burn

It is in the stillness
That I can truly see
The lessons I have learned
And what they mean to me
It's not what others think
It's not what I've been taught
I've seen my greatest 'sin'
Is doing what I ought
My God has made each one
With spirit that is true
To honour this in each
Is what we all must do
This will bring the stillness
And fill us with the grace
Make all we say and do
The world a peaceful place.

  •  Ashok Kumar Madhunlall: "The stillness - Wow, such a powerful metaphor. For me, it is an integraal part of my daily morning ritual. If I think it a luxury that I cannot afford then all things go wrong. Yes the stillness, when given a few precious moments of sowing blossoms into an abundance of rewards. Thank you for capturing this so well. I truly enjoyed this poem. Stillness - yes indeed a panacea for all that irks us. Great work my sister, Esther."
  •  Meryl Klanfar: "The stillness is not easy to find in this rushing world, but once you do find it, treasure the moment, as you do. A very lovely poem."
  •  Happy Mhlongo: "Every Stanza got its meaning..Clever and true.... nice piece of work...Keep the effort up... You can do more... Don't let same1 judge you negatively"
  •  Mary Kettle: "I love every bit of it It is in the stillness that our thoughts are indeed clearer."
