»Political Menus«

by Tiema Muindi

They spoke
Sang and danced
The virtues of their political menu
Spiced in promises and hopes
Of free housing
Free education
And of jobs to earn our living
No crime, no corruption
And we applauded

That leaking shack
They had it repaired
The cross of debts
That too was lifted
From my shoulder
And we wined
We dined

Paradise
Had descended
So we thought
Would continue
Long after
Giving them our votes

We now know
We sold our votes
We now know
We had been duped
Sweet tongues
Slippery words
Spicy manifesto
Elusive characters

They now don't
Visit our shacks
We now can't
See them in person
We now know not
Where they live

And on our hands
Are empty plates
Empty hopes
Tunnel without lights
Until when they come again
Our votes to seek
