»Friendship and Roses«

by Esther Odendaal

Is friendship like a rosebush
Requiring special care?
Not often grown from seed
But grafted – planted bare.

Dormant in the winter
Thorns then plain to see
Stronger for the pruning
Hidden, what could be.

Tender leaves and stems
Begin to sprout in spring
Strength now from the feeding
Green promises they bring.

Not meaning to be fussy
They do prefer more sun
Rich, but light the soil
So water through can run.

If these few simple steps
Are followed truthfully,
Buds begin to form
Will open naturally.

Vibrant colour brightens
Brings alive the space,
Sweet the heady scent
Contentment smiles the face.

If friendship is a rosebush,
How long will our plant last?
There's tending to be done -
Will we share the task?

Don't you love the roses?
The density of hue?
Will this one flush of blooms
Be enough for you?
