»I grew up/Golden egg«

by Happy Mhlongo

I grow up knowing that:
A woman is a golden egg
That must not be dropped
Must not be left in the sun
Because it will melt.

I grow up
With believes that she must be always happy at all cost.
And be treated with care and respect.
Where I'm from, a woman is something special
That must not be hurt or treated unfairly.
That a woman must not be beaten.
I grew up in a little village
That taught me a women is an Imbokodo
And with a believe that women must be feared
I grew up wise.
Some said I was stupid
I grew up wise, that's why I'm happy today/
I've chosen to fear the golden egg.
Treat them differently and with respect.

My late father showed through mom
That a woman is an egg.
Handle it with care and carefully.
Your stupidity can let it fade away

I grew up in the hand of a woman.
Comfort me when I felt ill and beat me when I crossed the line
The woman that had worked slavery to see us happy.
The woman that taught me to live life honestly.
I am who I am today because of the golden egg.
That equipped me and saved me many times

Without a woman's love where would I be?
I've grown up to see a happy golden egg happy too.
