»Made to Dance«

by Esther Odendaal

For years I thought that life
Was meant to be a race –
That we were made to run,
To hurry and to chase.

Somewhere in the madness
I stopped to catch my breath
The urge to run the race
Had strangely met it's death.

The music in the air
Was calling me to dance
So gingerly at first
I chose to take the chance.

It was so hard at first,
I felt like such a fool
Was I the only one
Who heard the music's rule:

'Loosen up and listen,
Just let your body flow
Counting one-two-three
Until new steps you know.'

While the world was rushing,
I gave in to the sound
All I found was freedom
As I twirled round and round.

It's taken me some time,
But now I know for sure,
The race is not for me –
The winning not the lure.

At times I dance alone
And tune into the beat
At times I have a partner -
We synchronise our feet.

Life is now a sequence
Of unexpected songs,
And I am made to dance
Whichever step belongs.
