»The Lightning«

by Esther Odendaal

I've been struck by lightning
A bolt out of the blue
Caught me unawares
As through the sky it flew.

It pierced my hardened heart –
Shot through every vein
Setting fire to baggage
Gathered from past pain.

Paralyzed pretenses
Denial opened wide
Damaged all defenses
Cracked my paltry pride.

Blazing through my brain
It forged new trails of thought
Those splintered swords of light
Exposed what they had sought.

The indestructible
Pure metal mould of me
Had stood the test of fire,
Now shiny, clear and free!

It happened in a flash
I marvel at its name,
It didn't hurt at all
Despite the spark and flame.

I've been struck by lightening
No more heavy sighs
I'm so glad it came and left
A sparkle in my eyes.
