»war of the elements«

by Moemise Motsepe

I wonder which would win
if the elements went to war
to which would magic and majesty yield
if a day would dawn when nature sought a king
to define a new cosmic order
when lightning thunders its rage across the skies
and fire seething in livid mortal fury
when hurricanes storm across the universe
and lava erupts in volcanic wrath
each staring the other in the eye
as brute faces brute
in fatal duel each beast against the other thrown
the destruction of one in the hands of the other
when monster rips monster apart

but amid this war of the elements
only one will stand apart
waiting for creature to crush creature
for vassal to pound vassal to death
so that he the master element
may stand yet again the vanquisher most profound
as wave after tumultuous wave roars the earth
in its wake unleashing ancient passions

today all will bow to the will of the supreme element
lord of the skies and king of the earth
water
the giver of life and the taker of it
the poet crowns you king of the elements

and therein lies the simple truth
the meek are weak only when they stand apart
