»Cautious Coals«

by Esther Odendaal

A singular sweet breeze
Blew cautious coals alight
The shortest little burst
Fanned flames that burned so bright.
They flushed and danced with joy
Just thrilled to be alive
Sick of simply smouldering
Delighted to connive.
The wind had blown before
With power and with force
This time wafted lightly-
A certain, gentle course.
Embers well remember
The breath that passed this way
And wonder if air too
Has words it will not say.
Cautious coals keep glowing
While longing for that touch
Can't bring themselves to ask
In case they ask too much.
