»Galantly the flags billow«

by Moemise Motsepe

In the season of the beautiful game
at its finest
its grandest ever
gallantly billow the flags on African soil
as nations meet in her south
at a time of peace to wage bloodless combat
as each stakes a quest
to lift the greatest cup of all
the crown for which many will weep
and fewer will rejoice when the carnival ends
it is time

The melody of anthems fill the heart
as titan is drawn against titan
idol against idol matched
only one nation will be kings
when the fire burns in the veins
as the lions roar and roam the grassland
and the magic of the universe gathers
to unleash an earthquake of voices
the people chanting in tongues unheard before
when glory descends upon the warriors
and the hour of the hero arrives
ah!
it is time

And to those nations that are yet to lift the trophy
to enrich the narrative of this great contest
the day will dawn when your story is told
when the volcano of your voices erupts
the quest for a prize greater than gold
lies in the sights of those that see through their hearts
triumph is the fool of the brave

winazela
warrior
it is time
