Other poems by Moemise Motsepe:
»we remember the lion«
(a tribute to The Lion of Azania,
Dr Zephania Lekoloane Mothopeng)
with each sunrise that graces the birth of a new day
we remember the lion
and sing of the epic roar
that echoed the pride of our birthright
out of the clench of yesterday?s grave
at sundown
when lastlight opens the curtains of the sky
to reveal the diamonds of the night
we remember the lion
and go to our sleep robed in the warm blanket
which is the dignity of his memory
whether in the silent orphanage of winter
or during the bridal joy of spring
we remember the lion
for the legacy of his wisdom
and the glory of his courage
the roots that hold together the journey of the seasons
the pilgrimage from autumn?s decay
to the rebirth of the sun in summer
these are the gifts that glow in our hearts
a heritage of majesty has found a home within
we remember the lion
for it is only in the heart that true monuments
stand with the nobility of the baobab
and today
as africa walks hand in hand into the sunrise of applause
adorned in the robes of the first royals
we remember the lion
