»Magic carpet of dreams«

by Marcia Nonkululeko Tladi

Her straw-coloured reed magic carpet
Won?t fly
She sits and weaves
And warps and wefts
It tells a yarn of dreams
Abandoned

Her straw-coloured reed magic carpet
Won?t fly the sky
She cries
She weaves some more
But that carpet won?t fly

Why she stands staunch
On its belly
Putting all her weight
On it
That carpet wont?fly

Were I she
I would lay eyes-shut
And tempt the dream
When my carpet floats
I would hold with might
And let my skirts spill
Over the edges

I would greet the clouds
And swathe the skies
In glorious laughter
I would sing with birds
Chase the winds
And swing on the rainbow

Were I she
I would twirl a whirlwind
Of glitter with the stars
And tie lightening
Into ribbons

Her straw-coloured reed magic carpet
Won?t fly
She sits and weaves
And cries long tears

Little girl living a faithless reverie
I?ll swear by it if you should listen
If you wave your magic wand of faith
That paints your carpet technicoloured
Little girl I swear
That carpet will fly
