»Woman of hope«

by Mercy Buhle Mhlaba

The echo of my voice stretches further than the reach of my ears
The still of my body silences the noise of my mind
The anger of my heart dissolves in the forgiveness of my spirit
And when I open my eyes the darkness I felt before is flooded with light
That light is the fight of my inner being
It is the right of birth I hold within,
The insight of deeds and choices
The choices I weigh and the deeds I partake in
And so I smile,
I smile over all situations I have control of
Because I am that woman, I am that woman...

I am that woman that holds a dream,
A dream to rise above all situations
I am that woman that hums a hymn,
A hymn that soothes a troubled soul
I am that woman that cradles a baby to life,
A life that I value as the future
Because the future is the essence of a beautiful tomorrow
A tomorrow that is so bright it literally blinds my eyes.

So throughout the seasons I search for that root,
That root of drive I feel moving in me
That root of serenity I harbour inside
That root of will that goes beyond needs
And when all is said and done,
I discover that root to be hope
Because hope is believing and believing is achieving
And achieving is the definition of the years I have gone through.
So as I look back I smile and as I look into the future I smile
Because hope has taken me to great heights
It has brought me to where I am today
Hope has brought me home.
