Other poems by Mercy Buhle Mhlaba:
»How could I not have loved you?«
How could I not have loved you?
When the mind refused to think
and the heart took over,
When the promise of life
became the promise of eternity,
When all thoughts consumed reason
and allowed feelings to take charge
I had but two options,
either to love you or to love you.
Because my love was for you to take,
and yours was mine.
Just as the stars claim positions
on the great dark heights,
And the rivers force their flow
over the dry barren land,
And the sun prides of the light
and heat felt on earth,
It was just as natural for me to love you.
It was the season of living because loving you became my heart's joy
Then I knew I would never be the same again
Because I learnt to love selflessly,
The same way that a bird gives worms to her little ones,
The same way that the rain brings back to life withered plants,
And the same way that mountains will always tower over valleys...
From the time I met you,
I knew I was yours to love
and you were mine,
So how could I not have loved you?
When the mind refused to think
and the heart took over,
When the promise of life
became the promise of eternity,
When all thoughts consumed reason
and allowed feelings to take charge
I had but two options,
either to love you or to love you.
Because my love was for you to take,
and yours was mine.
Just as the stars claim positions
on the great dark heights,
And the rivers force their flow
over the dry barren land,
And the sun prides of the light
and heat felt on earth,
It was just as natural for me to love you.
It was the season of living because loving you became my heart's joy
Then I knew I would never be the same again
Because I learnt to love selflessly,
The same way that a bird gives worms to her little ones,
The same way that the rain brings back to life withered plants,
And the same way that mountains will always tower over valleys...
From the time I met you,
I knew I was yours to love
and you were mine,
So how could I not have loved you?

Christopher Kudyahakudadirwe: "This piece reminds one of love left behind when exiting into exile, it refreshes feelings fading into love ashes. Beautiful!"
