Other poems by Mamello Monageng:
»And I learnt to beg«
I was taught to beg
I was no born beggar
I grew up in the world of made beggars
They took it all from my ancestors
And left me with nothing
I can only make up the pain they went through
For I am prompted not to blame the past for my todays
Those who were made beggars and now made to change their past
They keep looking down on me
Saying I should work hard
Is it a matter of working hard?
Miners work hard, labourers work hard
I do too, it takes my pride, my future, my skin colour
To be where I am,
That, is more than hard work Sir
I did not choose to be a beggar
I was made a beggar
If you believe that being a beggar is less,
that I live from hand to mouth -
take a look at those who queue for meager paycheque
there is no difference.
I was no born beggar
I grew up in the world of made beggars
They took it all from my ancestors
And left me with nothing
I can only make up the pain they went through
For I am prompted not to blame the past for my todays
Those who were made beggars and now made to change their past
They keep looking down on me
Saying I should work hard
Is it a matter of working hard?
Miners work hard, labourers work hard
I do too, it takes my pride, my future, my skin colour
To be where I am,

I did not choose to be a beggar
I was made a beggar
If you believe that being a beggar is less,
that I live from hand to mouth -
take a look at those who queue for meager paycheque
there is no difference.
