»Silhouette Moments«

by Mercy Buhle Mhlaba

When the sun goes down
and amber envelopes the heavens,
When I surrender liberally
and let you reside in my thoughts and mind
The momentary guilt creeps up again
Because we have loved each other in and out of time
And although I was yours for a moment
We were always a half of a different heart,
We could never walk under the moonlight together
Or gaze at the shooting stars hand in hand
Because those moments were forbidden by me and you.

When the ebony night slowly approaches
and the stars perch the sky,
When I sob freely
and release you into the thin air
I finally say goodbye to the silhouette moments
For they were but torture nips
Masquerading as romantic tiffs
And although you knew me through and through
You were a perfect stranger with every sunrise,
You could never hold on to a light so bright
Because you lived the dream of another man
and cursed the desires of your own heart.
Though we locked souls for a moment
We were always destined to part
So we blew the dust and watched us fade
While we freed the lasts of what we once were.
