»The Gold Digger«

by Hettie Van Zyl

Deep in the Belly of the Earth,
the Digger digs for Gold.
Always hoping to find this precious stuff, that he can have and hold.
Already forgot how hard it was so early, just getting out of bed.
Also of his morning thoughts, that maybe it was the last goodbye he said.

The frightness of the darkness here.
Only lit up by the light of a lamp fitting firmly on his head,
helping him to find a stand.
So that he can drill the correct hole, to put the dynamite in.
That will blow up the stone hard rock
and maybe makes his heart do sing.
Or maybe it will bring an end
to his long time search for Gold.
And never let him find that precious stuff, that he could have and hold.

Yes that is the life of a Miner
Digging and believing each new day
That he will find what he is searching for,
A hope that while he still a life.
Never will fade away.
