»You and I«

by Mercy Buhle Mhlaba

We beat the odds of distance you and I
Hoped against hope
Believed in the evidence of the unseen
And kept the faith
While we reached a pact unfit for words

I searched deep for the pact meaning
Flipped through my script of life
And it was written in black and white
You were what I was looking for
And I was yours...
The eye had not seen
But the ear had heard
The mind was so unsure
But the heart had long given in
So we sealed the deal
In an unvoiced understanding
And waited patiently

Amidst the frustrations of waiting
I saw the sun shine through the rain
And I ticked a mark in our favour
God must have been smiling in approval
To set a path so smooth with signs

We crossed the bridge of the ordinary you and I
Built a slab of trust
Walked tall and confident before our time
And swore to seek the missing bits
For though we were apart
Our spirits danced together
And our hearts were a completion of each other
