»The Lion Man«

by Emmanuel Ekale Esambe

On our national seal
is a peculiar engraving
of a lion.
Bright, bold and gold,
it looks out with a snarl -
always.

It used to be different
in the days of old .
It used to be different
in the days gone by.
It used to be a farmer
in a green field
harvesting tobacco leaves –
I wish.
Then the Lion Man came,
like in the present "entente";
he breeds rose and cheer
all through – in words and looks.
"Le plus beau pr?sident en Afrique" .
He was hailed
almost like in the triumphant entry.

Alas! All good things shall pass away.

He was a real lion,
an animal of prey.
Eating the catch of the lioness,
He roars through the land
Waging a tail of deceit;
We reap inertia and abandonment
