»What is it«

by Dilindile William Maphosa

What is it
when a dog releases excrement on the same spot,
even after the umpteenth removal of same from lush lawns,
when discoloured dots of blemishes continue to hold on
the pungent ordour that lingers on these unsightly blots

What is it
when a pig returns to eat its own vomit,
licking all the intestinal slime with relish
and gulping the grime back to its insides

What is it
when a spider's cobwebs return
to proliferate the crevices, gaps and clefts
found in the woodworks of a show house,
even after every sweep of countless hours

What is it
when a soul continuously slips
into the slimy pit of sin
with unyielding spirit

What is it, what is this?

Oh Mighty Saviour;
that you may send your generous
downpour of a Spirit so merciful and gracious

And that clear water streams may gush
out from the inside of your vessels and run
free to cleanse the outside of the vile reek
and pervasive stink
