»The Ghost of Henley«

by Ryan Gordon Penn

Theres an apparition of a man standing outside that house in Henley drive
He stares at you as you go by as if your dead and he's alive

He is waiting and has been waiting for 101 years patiently
For his love to return from the Shirtwaist Triangle factory

She was slight of build but big on heart and her name was Helen
The good Lord walked her slowly home on 25 March in the year 1911

It was just one day after she accepted a proposal most divine
"Please be my wife, my love, my soul. Please be mine"

It was tough to go to work after a night so perfectly surreal
She promised she would return quickly to fix him a meal

The day went by so slowly, She showed everyone her shiny ring
The wedding day, Children and her excitement kept her smiling

4:45pm finally arrived and soon she would feel his embrace
thats where this story changes, this is where the tragedy takes place

It all happened in 20 minutes after a fire broke out in the factory
Those doors wouldnt open outwards, there was no way to flee

The crowd of burning girls panicked as the fire stole their breath
Most of the girls fell 9 stories on to the concrete to their death

Helen removed her ring as it started to burn her finger, it bled
She placed it in her pocket and these are the words she last said
"Henry my love, Henry my soul you were all I had ever wanted and
all I would need, Just being with you filled my life with care, I am complete.
Though I shall never see you again with these eyes of mine, Know this, my love
I wait for you in heaven to continue this love divine".

Helen jumped out the window her body burnt beyond recognition
When they found the body her ring was the only way of positive identification

Theres an apparition of a man standing outside that house in Henley drive
He stares at you as you go by as if your dead and he's alive

He is waiting and has been waiting for 101 years patiently
For his love to return from the Shirtwaist Triangle factory
