»Words of a mixed race girl«

by Anesa Dindar, February 12, 2010

What are you?

They ask, 'What are you?'
looking at me strangely –
wondering, whispering, enquiring, deliberating,

Assessing me keenly –
hair, nose, skin, colour,

Appraising me openly –
race, creed, culture, ethnicity

Evaluating me eagerly –
mixture, combination, concoction, cocktail,

Observing me slyly –
enticing, intriguing, unconventional, peculiar,

What are you?

Just me.
Like you.

"Welcome here. That's a touching piece. You've chosen the words both emotionally and very consciously to create a powerful poem. By the way, I've got two mixed-raced daughters (eurasian).
